The Project
To extend an existing concrete patio without a jarring transition, we framed the perimeter with a mica slate border, laid in a tight, irregular flagstone pattern along the outer edge. The slate border reads as an intentional design feature rather than a repair — widening the usable patio space while adding texture and a natural stone accent against the plain concrete field. The mica content in the slate gives the stone a subtle shimmer in direct light, a detail that shows up nicely in full sun.
Mica slate gets its shimmer from tiny flecks of mica embedded in the stone — the same mineral that makes glitter and eyeshadow sparkle. It forms naturally when heat and pressure compress layers of clay and volcanic ash over millions of years, aligning those mica flakes in thin, reflective sheets. So technically, that patio border is sparkling with the same stuff as a highlighter compact — just several hundred million years in the making.
